She tarnished her profession.

Wettlaufer, a former Ontario nurse who murdered eight seniors in her care, was sentenced Monday to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. Sorry is much too small a word.

During a brief statement to the court, Wettlaufer apologized to her victims and their families for the grief she caused.

All of Wettlaufer's victims were either in long-term care facilities or in failing health.

Wettlaufer, 50, has pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with a series of incidents that occurred at nursing homes in Woodstock and London, Ont. Wettlaufer has said she believed she was acting as an instrument of God by injecting her elderly victims with insulin.

The judge reminded everyone there that Wettlaufer is unlikely to ever be released. "And that, in fact, seems likely".

"She was overwhelmed, angry and depressed".

Wettlaufer was arrested in October 2016 after confessing to her crimes while receiving treatment at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

The Silcoxes added that the death of James Silcox may have hastened the death of his wife, as she passed three weeks after she was informed of his murder. "I couldn't lay in bed", her statement read. "I was doubled over in pain in my stomach.Just such pain".

You can read all the victim impact statements in their entirety in the document below. She is one of the worst serial killers in Canadian history.

She hallucinated, couldn't speak or scream for help, had an out-of-body experience and "couldn't understand why no one was helping me".

"She'll never see the light of day", he said outside the courthouse.

She claimed a growing rage over her job and life led to an "urge to kill".

"I truly think sometimes I'd be better off if she did her deed".

Thomas spoke directly to the families during his decision, telling them he could understood their feelings of betrayal, anger, guilt, distrust, grief and depression.

"She was far from an angel of mercy", Superior Court justice Bruce Thomas said.

Family members lean on each other for support after reading their impact statements to the court at the sentencing of Elizabeth Wettlaufer, in Woodstock, Ont, Monday, June 26, 2017.

"Finding out she was killed by a huge injection of medication she did not need broke my heart", she said. "She's raining on our parade". I dirtied myself, I peed myself. "I am extremely sorry".

"Peace of mind is not something I enjoy any longer", the court heard.
