Trump reaches out to lawmakers on healthcare as another says 'no'

Sandy Vega | 26 June, 2017, 04:42

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., would not commit his support to the replacement plan because he needs feedback from health care experts in SC.

Facing unanimous Democratic opposition, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must get yes votes from 50 of the 52 GOP senators to avoid a defeat. The bill would slash Medicaid and rescind the Obamacare requirement that most Americans have health insurance.

But that ended Thursday after Senate Republicans unveiled their health care bill.

Cruz said the bill should allow individuals to purchase health insurance across state lines, which would increase competition and lower costs. I don't think this kills the bill: Heller is the single most deserving of a lifeboat of any Republican senator, given his reelection circumstances, and McConnell may well have given him the nod to go ahead with this statement. And I think that they'll probably get there.

Trump will lead the effort to try to convince reluctant Republicans to support the bill. McConnell is working to get other Republican holdouts to back the health-care bill for a possible vote next week, as he begins to separate those who can be won over with modest changes and those who may have unbridgeable concerns. "There is no excuse for any Republican or Democrat to oppose the Senate health care bill outright", group President Brian Walsh said Friday.

The Senate bill would reduce federal funding for the Medicaid expansion starting in 2021. That should be the central issue for Republicans - repealing Obamacare and making healthcare more affordable.

"I can not imagine that these very fine Republican Senators would allow the American people to suffer a broken ObamaCare any longer!" he wrote.

Trump held a victory celebration in the Rose Garden of the White House after the House vote, but since then has called the legislation "mean".

The bill would make significant changes to the Affordable Care Act, which Obama signed into law over seven years ago.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said that under the House bill, 23 million fewer people would have coverage by 2026.
