Sheriff: Teen injured after fall from Six Flags 'Sky Ride'

Sandy Vega | 26 June, 2017, 03:27

The 14-year-old was taking part in a "Sky Ride" gondola attraction at Six Flags Amusement Park in upstate NY. "Go ahead", a man yells as the girl falls and bystanders applaud the crowd who caught her. It was then that the girl plummeted to the ground, hitting a tree branch before being caught by several people below.

The girl, from Greenwood, Delaware, was on the Sky Ride, a slow gondola-style attraction.

Police and emergency medical services were sent to the park at 8:05 p.m. It's not clear how the victim, a 14-year-old visitor from DE, slipped free, but local police confirmed that she's now at the nearby Albany Medical Center, in stable condition and with no serious injuries.

The video shows the girl somehow slipped through the safety bar, which briefly held her aloft while she dangled in the air.

The 47-year-old and his 21-year-old daughter, Leeann Winchell, positioned themselves under the girl as the ride stopped and security came running.

The unnamed girl was rushed to the hospital but did not sustain any serious injuries, officials told the Associated Press.

The operator brought the ride to a stop after learning that a rider was in distress. They didn't know how she'd fallen out of the ride.

A girl fell from the Sky Ride to the ground below and was caught by staff and park-goers.

Six Flags released a statement saying that New York State's Department of Labor has cleared the ride for operation, but that no one can use it until an internal review of the incident has occurred.

Park officials said the ride was working properly. Another man attempting to participate in the rescue also suffered a back injury. The park said in a statement that the accident "does not appear to be any malfunction of the ride".
