Police Claim White Cop Shot Black Cop In A 'Friendly Fire' Incident

Sandy Vega | 26 June, 2017, 02:27

An off-duty black St. Louis police officer who joined the pursuit of individuals believed to have stolen a auto ended up being shot by one of his white colleagues, reports say.

According to Fox 2 Now, the officer who fired at his colleague told investigators he feared for his safety and didn't recognize the man as one of their own.

The off-duty officer heard the commotion from his home nearby and rushed to the scene with his department-issued weapon. He complied, and soon after, they recognized him and told him to get up.

The scene of a police pursuit in St. Louis that ended with one officer being shot by another.

Acting police chief Lawrence O'Toole said officers were pursuing stolen auto when three suspects inside opened fire on Wednesday night. Police took him and another suspect into custody.

Two of the suspects, both 17-year-old black boys, were arrested and had their guns confiscated, while a third ran away.

Police are still searching for the third suspect involved in this incident. He had just finished his shift, and had his service weapon out, chasing a man who had broken into his vehicle, police said. To add to the confusion, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the shooting victim was initially described to reporters by Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole as an off-duty police officer who had been caught in the cross-fire between the fleeing stolen auto suspects and pursuing St. Louis officers.

At that moment, a fourth officer arrived.

The injured off-duty officer is described as a 38-year-old man with 11 years of service.

"In the police report you have so far, there is no description of a threat he received". The officer went to hospital but was released without any serious injuries. Two officers "fearing for their safety" fired at the suspects and hit one in the ankle. "There is this perception that a black man is automatically feared". He and another 17-year-old suspect are jailed.

A jury later rejected a $20 million federal lawsuit by Young's mother against the city and its police force, who she claimed didn't properly train officers about how to identify their off-duty and plainclothes counterparts.

"[The officers] followed the vehicle to the area of West Florissant and Riverview, where they spiked the vehicle".
