Trump calls Comey a liar

Trump calls Comey a liar Trump calls Comey a liar

"The Oval Office, right now, is an unfriendly climate for truth", former CIA Director Michael Hayden told the London Times days after US President Donald Trump's very public dismissal of FBI Director James Comey in May. "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication. and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

"No I didn't say that", Trump stated abruptly, taking questions after meeting Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

The department later appointed Robert S. Mueller III, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, as special counsel.

Comey testified Thursday that Trump asked him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and implied Trump may have become the subject of investigation himself for interfering in the FBI's work.

"I was anxious the media was camping at the end of my driveway at that point. and I anxious it would be like feeding seagulls at the beach", Comey said when asked why he did not simply release the information himself.

The scandal exploded on the White House lawn when, in January 2017, reports began to surface that National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had communicated with the Russian ambassador in Washington, Sergei Kislyak, regarding U.S. sanctions in retaliation for the alleged Russian hacking.

But Comey seemed unconcerned about that prospect when he acknowledged the move Thursday before a throng of cameras and a packed Senate intelligence committee hearing room. Pressed on the issue, he insisted he wasn't "hinting anything", before adding, "Oh you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry". And Comey vindicated at least one of the White House's talking points: that the president was correct when he said he was not under direct FBI investigation.

The way Comey tells it, the first time he met Trump, Comey got the heebie-jeebies - for a whole bunch of small reasons but nothing in particular.

He said that he'd carefully documented his interactions with Trump because he anxious Trump would misrepresent them, and accused the administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" about the reasons for his firing.

Standing with Iohannis, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partner, Trump at last confirmed his commitment to the alliance's mutual defense pact, Article 5, uttering words he deliberately did not say when he spoke at NATO's gathering in Belgium last month. She called Comey an "honorable individual". "Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction", Trump said. But after Trump fired Comey in May, the president tweeted: "Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

Kasowitz has denied that account, but he also argued that Comey's move "unilaterally and surreptitiously made unauthorized disclosures to the press of privileged communications with the president".

But more evidence is needed to prove that the president attempted to stymie the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, which has several Trump campaign aides in its crosshairs.

Trump branded Comey a "leaker" for indirectly providing to reporters the contents of memos he wrote after their private conversations. US intelligence agencies have said Russian Federation stole private emails and other documents from Democrats and released them publicly a year ago to embarrass Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and aid Trump.

By Comey's account, the president repeatedly contacted him and talked in private about the investigation.

Comey said he felt uncomfortable with the nature of his personal meetings with Trump, including a private dinner at the White House.
