Pew study: Americans increasingly torn over gun issues Pew study: Americans increasingly torn over gun issues

Nearly half of all Americans say they know someone who has been shot and about a quarter say they or someone in their family have been threatened by someone with a gun, according to a Pew Research Center report released Thursday. The Pew survey released Thursday found a significant decline in overall support for gun control, despite some common ground on key issues.

That was one of several areas where people with and without guns differed on policies: Seventy-seven percent of people without guns said they favored banning assault-style weapons, while only 48 percent of gun owners did, and 74 percent of people without guns said that they favored banning high-capacity magazines, while only 44 percent of gun owners did. But gun owners who live strictly rural were "significantly more likely to cite hunting as a major reason for owning a gun".

But the divide between Republicans and Democrats who say it's important to protect the right of Americans to own guns has widened since 2000 - from an 18-percentage-point gap to a 54-point gap.

Among all adults, 89 percent favored policies preventing the mentally ill from purchasing guns, and 84 percent favored background checks in private sales and at gun shows.

More than half of gun owners think that the waiting period to buy guns legally should be shortened, and 66 percent of gun owners think teachers and administrators should be allowed to carry guns in primary and secondary schools, while only a third of non-owners support such proposals. And 23 percent said they, or someone in their family, has been threatened or intimidated by someone using a gun. Among those polled, 1,269 identified themselves as gun owners while 2,608 said they did not own a firearm.

The poll also comes just a week after a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia, reigniting the debate over gun laws and personal safety.

Almost a quarter of Americans said they or someone in their family had been threatened or intimidated by someone with a gun.

And while the stereotypical gun owner is a conservative proud of his weapon, actually only half consider it important to their identity.

Gun owners tend to feel that their firearms are part of their identity and freedom, which non-gun owners seem to have a hard time understanding.

As for violence in their local communities, 49 percent of black respondents said it was a very big problem, compared with 11 percent of whites.

52 percent of Americans said gun laws should be stricter ...

Overall, the public is deeply divided over the effect of guns on crime. The Pew study found that 35 percent of those surveyed say guns should be permitted in most places.
