Riyadh announced Monday it captured three Iranians, member of the Islamic Republic's Revolutionary Guards, on a boat laden with weapons heading towards an oil platform, in the Arabian Gulf. In remarks to Iran's ILNA news agency, he said there is no proof they are military personnel.

Saudi Arabia's Information Ministry said in a statement the three were onboard a boat carrying a large number of explosives headed toward the Marjan oil field, located off the kingdom's eastern shores between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Iran's Tasnim news agency said on Saturday that Saudi border guards had opened fire on an Iranian fishing boat in the Gulf on Friday, killing a fisherman.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran were already strained but escalated after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other allies cut ties with Qatar two weeks ago.

The statement said the boats carried "red and white flags". The seized boat contained a stash of "weapons for subversive purpose" and had three men onboard.

One of the boats was intercepted, while the two others managed to get away. "When Iran looks at ISIS it sees Saudi Arabia".

Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Baghdad in 2015 following a 25-year break, and in February the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, made a rare visit to Baghdad.

Qatar denies any such support for extremists.

That has been seen as heralding closer cooperation against Islamic State, which controls territory in Iraq and in Syria and has claimed bombings in Saudi Arabia.

The Iraqi prime minister is reaching out to regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and Iran for support for his anti-terror campaign.

Aqababaei said documents proving Iran's claim have been handed over to the Interior Ministry and it is following up othe case through indirect diplomatic channels.
