Cheering 1st day of summer? Not in Phoenix when 120 expected

High temperatures looking to surpass the new record of 106 degrees on Sunday Cheering 1st day of summer? Not in Phoenix when 120 expected

A heatwave is sweeping America's southwest this week, with weather authorities warning residents temperatures could reach as high as 49 degrees Celsius in Phoenix, Arizona. But they're big. Manufacturing giants Boeing and Airbus both have planes for long-haul flights that can handle temperatures as high as 126 or 127 degrees.

And, of course, the temperature in Phoenix on Tuesday, when the flights were cancelled, was over 118° Fahrenheit. The Arizona Department of Health Services says almost 2,000 people visit Arizona emergency rooms every year because of heat-related illnesses.

Tourists abandoned the normally bustling Las Vegas Strip to seek refuge inside air-conditioned hotels and casinos as the town that likes to call itself Sin City endured temperatures from hell and airlines cancelled flights out of the gambling mecca. Expect to see more of the same over the coming years and decades, as rising temperatures bring down quite a number of the services and infrastructure that modern industrial society depends upon.

American Airlines canceled almost 40 flights on Tuesday in Phoenix operated by regional jets because of the heat.

A California man has died after taking part in a 5K run in searing heat.

Mr Mann said aircraft may also be hampered because the charts used in flight manuals to calculate aircraft performance are not written with such heat in mind, making it impossible for pilots to accurately calculate payloads and take-off speeds.

Las Vegas could also see peaks on Tuesday and Wednesday, perhaps even gambling with its highest temperature ever observed, which was 117 degrees Fahrenheit in 2013.

These heat problems are why many countries in the Middle East and high-altitude airports schedule flights in the evening when it is cooler.

United Nations chief condoles with Portugal over wildfire deaths
The forest fires happened amid severe heatwave with temperatures reaching 40 °C in some areas of the country over the past days. Both experts say local people need instructions on how to react when a wildfire is approaching so they don't act rashly.

Because hotter air is thinner, planes also need more speed to take off and, thus, require more runway.

Four-year-old dog Chase wears a pair of booties that protect paws from the hot pavement.

There could be more cancellations later Tuesday, an airline spokesman said.

The reason the flights were grounded is because extreme temperatures can damage a plane's internal components - but the main reason is due to physics and air density.

Regional flights on American Eagle were the most affected, because they use Bombardier CRJ planes that can only operate at temperatures of 118 degrees or below, Feinstein said.

Phoenix has hit 120 only three times in recorded history - the last time 22 years ago. Excessive heat warnings were issued throughout the state of California today.

The heat wave is real and it is here.

Homeless people comprised one-third of heat-related deaths in 2016, according to county records. In the weeks leading up to the beginning of monsoon season, temperatures in Arizona, New Mexico, southern Nevada and Southern California typically climb to the highest they'll be all year.
