More refugees than ever forcibly displaced in 2016

Ellis Copeland | 20 June, 2017, 01:14

Syria has 12-million displaced people - the highest number in the world.

South Sudan turned into the third-biggest source of refugees overseas a year ago, behind Syria (5.5 million) and Afghanistan (2.5 million).

UNHCR is also running projects in Burkina Faso, to establish a dairy micro-enterprise owned by women's groups to supply milk to refugee families, in Ethiopia, to provide clean water for 95,000 in refugees and host populations, and in Democratic Republic of Congo to provide sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response programs.

There were another 2.8 million asylum seekers, the report said.

There were 40.3 million people displaced inside their own countries at the end of 2016, slightly fewer than the 40.8 million at the end of 2015.

Displaced South Sudanese gather during a visit of UNCHR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi to a new site for displaced people outside of the United Nations protected camp, in Bentiu, South Sudan Sunday, June 18, 2017.

The global community should do more to help South Sudan, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, said after visiting a camp for the displaced.

The figure that includes refugees, asylum seekers and people uprooted inside their own countries was some 300,000 higher at the end of past year than at the end of 2015, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.

Uganda, for instance, has over the past year received more than 2,000 refugees from South Sudan each and every day - more than many European countries took in a year, NRC chief Egeland pointed out. This huge imbalance reflects several things including the continuing lack of consensus internationally when it comes to refugee hosting and the proximity of many poor countries to regions of conflict.

According to the UNHCR report, Uganda received 532,725 new refugees past year.

The World Bank has joined the bandwagon by financing a special economic zone in Jordan to employ Syrian refugees and teach them new skills.

Around two thirds of refugees find themselves in a "protracted refugee system;" when at least 25,000 refugees of the same nationality have been in exile in a particular nation for five years.or refugees who have been displaced for over five years. "That's the primary reason why ourselves and our partners have been trying to shift the worldwide focus towards supporting those host countries".

Another 22.5 million people - half of them children - were registered as refugees previous year, the UNHCR report showed, pointing out that this is "the highest level ever recorded".
