Man Dies In Niagara Falls After Surviving 2003 Plunge

Terrapin Point on the American side of Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls State Park N.Y. Jones who survived a plunge over Niagara Falls without protection in 2003 has died after Man Dies In Niagara Falls After Surviving 2003 Plunge
Ellis Copeland | 18 June, 2017, 01:52

Horseshoe Falls is 170 feet high, according to the Niagara Gazette, and it is located in Queen Victoria Park, nearby the Table Rock House.

"That's the guy", Nisbet said when asked whether Jones was the same man who'd survived the falls on October 20, 2003, when he went over wearing only his clothes.

It remains to be seen why the Niagara Falls daredevil went for a second plunge when he previously declared he wouldn't do the deed again.

But Jones, who had been fined almost $3,000 and banned for life from Canada, tried it again, possibly trying a different method, and died doing so, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard.

A body recently discovered in the Niagara River has been identified as American Kirk Jones, 53, who had jumped into the falls in 2003 and lived, the Syracuse Post-Standard said, citing New York State Park Police.

Because of a NY state law requiring aerialists to wear a safety tether when performing above 20 people, Erendira Wallenda did wear a cable tether attached to her waist, which was meant to catch her if she fell.

The first person in recorded history to defy death by plunging over Niagara Falls without any protection has died after apparently trying the stunt again 14 years after his original attempt - this time in an inflatable ball.

It followed a separate, smaller protest at Kensington Town Hall, where residents tried to air their grievances to councillors. Mr Green said the Government expected to appoint a chairman to lead the public inquiry "in days rather than weeks".

"I'm feeling very happy to be alive", Jones told reporters after appearing in court in 2003.

What was supposed to be a suicide plunge only resulted in bruised ribs and a lost shoe.

His ball was picked up by the Maid of the Mist tour boat.

"I respect this man so much more because it was way more windy than I thought it would be", she said. He heard people screaming that there was a man in the water, he said. "Inside it. And enveloped in it, actually". However, there is no confirmation that such a book was ever published or in the works for publication.

The BBC reported that Jones was living in Canton, Michigan, at the time of the first stunt, but his most recent address was Spring Hill, Florida. His relatives could not be reached for comment.

Jones was the first of four people to survive an unprotected plunge.
