Russia's Lavrov calls for talks to ease Qatar stand-off

Ellis Copeland | 11 June, 2017, 13:33

"The format of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf is the most suitable format for a dialogue of the kind", Qatar's foreign minister said. Aircraft that fly out of Qatar - including fighter jets, drones and refueling planes - can be relocated to a number of other bases in the region including in Iraq, Turkey, Kuwait and Bahrain and off aircraft carriers, the officials said.

A separate SPA report on Saturday acknowledged Tillerson's call for Qatar to curtail support for terrorism, without mentioning that he had also said the crisis was hurting ordinary Qataris, impairing business and harming the US fight against the Islamic State militant group.

Erdogan vowed to keep supporting Qatar after his rapid approval of legislation on deploying Turkish troops there.

Mr Trump's demand that there be "no more funding" by Qatar for extremist groups contradicted the message delivered on Friday by Mr Tillerson, who urged Qatar's neighbours to ease their blockade while calling for "calm and thoughtful dialogue".

Recently, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya's transitional government, the Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Mauritius severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in retaliation for its alleged support to terrorism and extremist ideology.

Qatar is home to the largest U.S. airbase in the Middle East, making it a key ally in the US-led coalition against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. One senior White House official told Voice of America's William Gallo that Tillerson and Trump are on the "same page", but they're just "emphasizing different parts of that page", which is not how that metaphor works. "With over eight million Indian expatriates living and working in these countries, we have vital stakes in the regional peace and stability", the ministry said in a release.

British PM: Trump 'wrong' to attack London mayor
The Republican president took comments made by Mr Khan out of context to accuse him of being too relaxed in the face of terror. Prime Minister Theresa May , asked by The Sun newspaper whether the controversial trip would go ahead, answered "Yes".

The President publicly called Qatar a "funder of terrorism", and thanked "Saudi Arabia and my friend King Salman", in a move that could undermine American efforts to deal with the flare-up.

The tough USA line was a rebuff for Qatar's efforts to reach out for support from overseas.

Previously, US officers had denied the blockade was a problem, but Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said the "evolving situation is hindering our ability to plan for longer-term military operations".

"Russia will try to do everything possible, with consent and interest of the parties involved", he added, saying that Moscow "maintains contacts with the majority of participants in the ongoing processes".

The crisis is drawing in more countries. Additionally, Saudi Arabia sealed shut Qatar's only land border, impacting a significant source of food imports for the peninsula nation. "People from across the region - not only from Qatar, but also from the states implementing these measures - risk losing jobs and having their education disrupted".
