Cavs beat Celtics to earn NBA Finals rematch with Warriors

Frederick Owens | 28 May, 2017, 04:22

With the NBA Finals still six days way, Cavaliers star LeBron James isn't quite ready to start thinking about attempting to take down the juggernaut Warriors for the third consecutive season.

In 2016, it looked like everything was going the Warriors' way.

The Los Angeles Lakers had set the previous record of 12 straight wins in potential elimination games from 2000-2004. A victory will also break new ground in the National Basketball Association record book, with Cleveland and Golden State becoming the first two teams in the league's 71-year history to meet in the finals for three consecutive years.

But it all evaporated.

James, who shot 13 of 18 from the floor and 4 of 7 from 3-point range, hit a 3-pointer with 2:41 left in the third quarter to pass Michael Jordan and become the NBA's all-time leading playoff scorer.

James, a three-time Finals MVP, is next at 2-1.

The playoffs haven't been too exciting through three rounds, but NBA Finals has all the makings of a classic.

James spoke Thursday during the morning shootaround before the Cavaliers play the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The 51-year-old Kerr underwent a procedure May 5 to fix a spinal fluid leak stemming from complications after two back surgeries in 2015, after the Warriors won their first championship in 40 years during his first season as coach. "I'm very happy and I'm going to enjoy it until we play Golden State". But then he added this: "OK, maybe a slight preference for Cleveland". Us and Cleveland worked our butts off all year to put ourselves in a position to get a championship. And we are excited, and we are proud, but our head coach cant coach.

Steve Kerr's presence on the sidelines isn't certain as he deals with complications from back surgery.

Well on Thursday, reporters asked Warriors acting coach Mike Brown what he thought of Lue's comment. He's been present at practice and recently traveled with the team at the end of the Warriors' sweep against the Spurs. So, I'm just taking this thing one day at a time.

Nearly 20 percent of Golden State's playoff possessions came on the break. "And they've added an unbelievable player in Kevin Durant this year". It's easy for them to say that and just wake up in June and see it happen. "We just kept grinding".

"This will be talked about long after us", Green said. Simple as that. It's good that we're here now.

For the third straight year they'll face the Warriors for the crown.

James, edging ever closer to the "Greatest of All Time" title, has a legacy at stake.

The NBA and NHL finals were set Thursday night after the defending champions from both leagues advanced to the championship round.

Can the Cavs do it again? "Just to be a part of this is incredible, so really just embracing that". They also scored a franchise-best 135 points in the playoffs.

"I leave with a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth not playing as well here, and man you want to play well here", said an emotional Celtics coach Brad Stevens, who earned his first two playoff series wins this year. And so, I think maybe there's just a lack of appreciation for greatness. That was my mindset when I started playing the game.

Among all 16 postseason teams, the Warriors rank second in offensive efficiency (115.8) and first in points per game (118.3), assists per game (27.8) and field-goal percentage (50.2).

James still trails Jordan in one key area: titles.

For Boston, guard Avery Bradley was the only player to get anything going, with most of his 23 points coming in the first half.

A Warriors' team bent on revenge stands in his way.
