Montana GOP congressional candidate Greg Gianforte narrowly defeated Democratic challenger Rob Quist late Thursday night despite being charged with assault for "body slamming" a reporter. During his run for the House seat, Gianforte tied himself to Trump, promising to help "drain the swamp" and campaigning with Vice President Mike Pence and Donald Trump Jr.

Gianforte also campaigned with Montana Republican Senator Steve Daines, who tweeted on Thursday that he did "not condone violence in any way" and that Gianforte "needs to apologise". But the incident Wednesday that resulted in Gianforte allegedly assaulting Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, breaking his glasses, and sending him to the hospital instantly changed the tone of the entire election. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. "Rep. -elect Gianforte is an outsider with real-world experience creating jobs in Montana".

Gianforte and Quist were polar opposites in the race: The Republican had electoral experience from a previous but failed run at the Montana governorship a year ago, whereas Quist was a novice.

The race had grown closer in the last week, however, as Quist focused on criticism of the House healthcare bill. "Great win in Montana!"

Montana Republican Greg Gianforte was projected to win the state's seat in the US House of Representatives on Thursday night, according to The Associated Press and other media outlets.

It was unclear if Gianforte's assault had an impact on the vote. Ben Jacobs." He also apologized to the "Fox News team who were witnesses.

Gianforte apologized in his victory speech: "When you make a mistake you have to own up to it. last night I made a mistake, and I took an action that I can not take back".

A newly elected United States congressman has apologised after allegedly assaulting a news reporter one day before the special election.

Afterward, three state newspapers rescinded their endorsements of Gianforte. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Gianforte should apologize, adding, "I do not think this is acceptable behavior, but the choice will be made by the people of Montana".

Gianforte specifically addressed his apology to Jacobs.

"Last night I made a mistake and I took an action that I can't take back", he said.

"No, please", he said as he raised a hand to supporters so he could continue. "The last guy who came in here did the same thing!"

Gianforte had been a strong favourite throughout the campaign and that continued even after authorities charged him with assault on Wednesday.
