Ghebreyesus will be the first African ever to lead the United Nations health agency.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was nominated by the Government of Ethiopia, and will begin his five-year term on 1 July 2017.

Dr Adhanom emerged victorious in a tough election against two strong candidates; Dr Sania Nishtar from Pakistan and Dr David Nabarro from the United Kingdom.

During the third and final round of balloting in Geneva, members of the World Health Assembly voted 133-50 to pick Tedros, as he is known, to be the next director-general, according to unofficial tallies. Tedros, who goes by his first name, won the job over Sania Nishtar, a cardiologist from Pakistan, and David Nabarro, a World Health Organization veteran from Britain who led the U.N.'s response to the West Africa Ebola outbreak in 2014.

After almost two years of public campaigning, originally by six candidates, the election itself took place in a closed-door session in which the health ministers of 185 countries cast their ballots in secret.

Chan steps down on June 30 after a decade in which new epidemics such as bird flu and Ebola and decades-old campaigns against malaria, AIDS and malnutrition highlighted the complex health burden shouldered by the WHO.

Winning this election, Tedros has become the first African to head the World Health Organization top post.

The post Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus becomes the first African director-general of the World Health Organization appeared first on PBS NewsHour.

Nabarro, a WHO insider who has worked for 40 years in worldwide public health, had pitched himself as a "global candidate".

"I promise to run World Health Organization in the same manner in which I ran my campaign - cost-effectively, with full transparency, with a global outlook, with integrity, and respect for all...."

He has recently been accused of covering up three cholera epidemics in Ethiopia, but his supports say this is untrue.

Tedros served as Ethiopian health minister from 2005-2012 during when he managed to boost health care access across Ethiopia by creating over 3,500 health centres and deploying almost 40,000 Army of health workers.

Health officials, including from Washington, a key WHO donor, said the agency's new leadership needed to get emergency response right. Amongst them were hiring and training roughly 40,000 female health extension workers, cutting infant mortality from 123 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2006 to 88 in 2011, and increasing the hiring of health cadres including medical doctors and midwives.

The WHA is WHO's main decision-making body.

As director-general of WHO, Tedros will be responsible for deciding which medical issues will take priority and when crises like disease outbreaks will be treated as global emergencies.

Tedros, who seemed at ease with the journalists, said his meetings with member states during the campaign showed him that universal health coverage has to be "tailored" to local needs and conditions of the countries.

Corrects that Tedros was seven when his brother died, not that his brother was seven.
