One alcoholic drink a day linked to breast cancer

Model and Property Released A new study has found that one boozy drink a day can boost breast cancer odds

There are a number of possible explanations for the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk, said Chin-Yo Lin, a researcher at the University of Houston's Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling, who was not involved in the new report.

For the first time, researchers concluded evidence is strong that vigorous exercise reduces breast-cancer risk.

According to researchers, sipping an average of 10 grams of alcohol every day is associated with a 5 per cent increased breast cancer risk in pre-menopausal women and 9 per cent increase in post-menopausal women.

To the extent that being overweight has been found to increase an older woman's breast cancer risk, McTiernan said eating a diet full of fruits and vegetables can help women keep their weight down.

"Just half a glass of wine a day ups the risk of breast cancer by nine per cent, experts warn", The Sun reports.

AICR Head of Nutrition Programs Alice Bender, in a press release, also provided a recommendation on how women can lower the risk.

They estimate that one third of breast cancers could be prevented by exercising, not drinking alcohol, and staying a healthy weight. The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, Cancer Research UK, and the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer are all on board.

Meanwhile, women who were overweight throughout adulthood faced a heightened risk of breast cancer after menopause. For example, moderate activity, such as walking and gardening, was linked to a 13 percent lower risk when compared to the least active women.

"The pre-menopausal analysis included 10 large cohort studies in which over 4,000 women developed breast cancer", McTiernan said, according to CNN. "Drinking alcohol has a greater effect on the risks of several other cancers (such as cancers of the mouth, oesophagus and bowel) than it does on the risk of breast cancer, so there are other reasons to give up or cut down, but that just shows the importance [of] looking at the whole picture and not just at breast cancer". However, a recent research has suggested that consuming even a single drink per day can increase the chances of breast cancer.

The finding comes from the latest paper in a series that explores the link between cancer and lifestyle factors like diet and exercise.

But scientists say all these factors interact with each other and that makes it hard to tease out which ones are driving the cancer and to what extent.

"It's not a tradeoff-you can't say you'll add risk with a glass of wine and then decrease it by going for a run", she says.

Women concerned about their risk might want to substitute alcoholic drinks with low-calorie alternatives like water, sparkling water, tea, or coffee, McTiernan added.

"The findings indicate women may get some benefit from including more non-starchy vegetables with high variety, including foods that contain carotenoids", she said.

She noted that the report's evidence is significant.

The relationship between body weight and breast cancer risk seemed to be complex.
