Fox removes report from website about murdered DNC staff

Sandy Vega | 24 May, 2017, 06:16

Fox News has retracted a story on the 2016 murder of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich which was roundly condemned for perpetuating conspiracy theories.

"We will continue to investigate this story and will provide updates as warranted", it concluded.

Fox News lent the story new momentum last week when it posted an item about the story after Rod Wheeler, a Fox News contributor who is also a private investigator Rich's family has hired, was shown on Fox affiliate WTTG suggesting he had evidence linking Rich to Wikileaks. "Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards and has since been removed", reads a post on FoxNews.com announcing the retraction.

Mary and Joel wrote that instead of being allowed to grieve their son's death, they instead were subjected to a constant barrage of reporter questions and speculations about Seth's murder, and whether or not they thought it was part of a conspiracy theory. "I'm not saying I have answers yet, but I'm digging deep, and I have a lot more information than all of you do at this point".

"Your improper and unauthorized statements, many of which are false and have no basis in fact, have also injured the memory and reputation of Seth Rich and have defamed and injured the reputation and standing of the members of the Family", Ingrisano wrote in the cease and desist letter.

The letter from Rich's family was in response to Hannity's invitation to Dotcom. The Washington Metropolitan Police Department is still investigating the incident.

His leaving would have been a big problem for Fox News Channel, which is not without problems these days.

The Daily Beast nabbed a reaction from a former Fox executive, who says Roger Ailes must be rolling in his coffin: "Retracted. Wow".

"Still", Mary and Joel added, "conservative news outlets and commentators continue, day after painful day, to peddle discredited conspiracy theories that Seth was killed after having provided WikiLeaks with emails from the DNC". The amount of pain and anguish this has caused us is unbearable.

All along, Rich's family has asked Fox News to stop repeating the false claim about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation had supposedly confirmed the leaking. No real evidence has been provided to support such claims.

Fox retracted the article Tuesday, but Hannity has been promoting the same story line on his TV show, making him a top target at Media Matters, which in the past has similarly encouraged advertisers to ditch FNC shows hosted by Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck, as well as Rush Limbaugh's radio show.

New Zealand's Serious Fraud Office said earlier this year that an email he claimed in 2014 proved a supposed conspiracy against him was not authentic, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Hannity was still tweeting about Rich as of Tuesday evening, teasing that there would be a "huge announcement" on his show later in the night.
