Chaffetz resignation latest twist in GOP oversight of Trump

He announced in April that he would not seek re-election and would leave Congress before his term expired.

Utah's Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox says Governor Gary Herbert has directed him and his staff to begin working with municipal election officials in the district to prepare for the race to coincide with the scheduled November 7 general lection.

"There are lots of good people who care about these issues and are well-suited to carry out these investigations", Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz would not discuss his next career move, which some have speculated might include a cable news gig, but he said he planned to keep his residence in Utah.

Since Trump's election, Chaffetz has faced increasing pressure from constituents to more aggressively scrutinize President Trump's business dealings and his campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation. Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, had to recuse himself from that investigation after a weird incident where he emerged from the White House and seemed to suggest he had evidence backing up Trump's groundless contention that he had been surveilled by the Obama administration.

That leaves open the first congressional seat in Utah since 1929 and allows political hopefuls living in that district to run for their dreams of "making a difference" for the Beehive State while working in an increasingly dysfunctional Washington, D.C. Various rumors exist about the reason behind Mr. Chaffetz' decision to leave early, but many have theorized that the congressman is taking the advice of Navy Admiral McCraven's newest book, "Make Your Bed".

Chaffetz's abrupt exit upends the latest of the Republican-controlled congressional investigations into Trump and also marks a sudden halt to Chaffetz's decade-long climb to power.

A packed field of Utah Republicans is shaping up to replace Rep.

Chaffetz, a former kicker for the Mormon-owned Brigham Young University football team, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008.

Chaffetz became a campaign manager and chief of staff to former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr. but they had a falling out in 2012 when Chaffetz endorsed Mitt Romney for president over Huntsman.

It was then, he says, that he finally made the decision to leave Congress and his position as chairman of the powerful House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

"I kind of had a little bit of a midlife crisis".

"I think documents will help us to ferret out exactly what's the truth and what's a lie", Cummings said.

"I want to correct the narrative", said Herbert, "that the legislature has not had a say".
