Sacramento After an unusually rancorous election to lead the California Democratic Party, Kimberly Ellis, a political organizer from Richmond, announced Sunday she would not concede the race to longtime party activist and insider Eric Bauman until the party had conducted an "audit" of the almost 3,000 ballots cast by delegates the day before.

In a state where Democrats are itching to lead the liberal resistance to Trump and the Republican Congress, the party's activists find themselves singularly united behind the goal of stunting the GOP.

The divide was on clear display Friday as they opened their annual three-day convention in Sacramento.

Single-payer health care has fired up the thousands of Democratic activists at the convention in Sacramento on Saturday.

Some 3,000 delegates in the nation's largest state Democratic party will hear from their party's longstanding stalwarts and rising stars.

As California Democrats kicked off their weekend convention here with a cocktail reception featuring trays of scallion pancakes with Hoisin sauce and red grapes rolled in blue cheese and coated in pistachios, the throng advocating for a statewide publicly funded, universal health care system snaked down a staircase behind Perez, shouting down his calls for unity. Kamala Harris, the former state attorney general who often mentioned as a potential 2020 presidential candidate, and all Democrats running for governor.

The party's path back to national relevance will likely go through California, where half of the 14 Republicans in Congress represent districts that supported Clinton over Trump.

The hotly contested race reflected the deep divisions within the Democratic Party, which is universally committed to fighting President Donald Trump but has not fully healed from last year's contentious presidential primary between Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Some ppl holding signs, petitions, challenging the results - BayCity Beacon (@BayCity_Beacon) May 21, 2017 Kimberly Ellis's statement about the California Democratic Party's chairperson election was posted to Facebook on Sunday afternoon.

She likened it to the aftermath of the 2004 presidential race, when the party was dismayed by the reelection of President George W. Bush and saw an influx of supporters of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, known as "Dean-iacs".

If the results hold up, Bauman would become the California Democratic Party's first openly gay chair.

"We are booing because we feel Perez is part of the establishment that keeps co-opting the progressive movement", Gilbert Feliciano, a state delegate who participated in the protest, told a local news outlet.

"We've had tremendous success in the electoral sense".

"Democrats, we must bind up our party's wounds for only then can we save our country", Schiff said. It's time for the party's progressive wing to flex its muscles, she said.
