Spurs beats Man United in stadium finale to secure 2nd spot

Frederick Owens | 17 May, 2017, 13:26

Redevelopment work at Tottenham Hotspur's home White Hart Lane began just hours after the English Premier League team's 2-1 victory there over Manchester United.

Tottenham fans staged a pitch invasion and then cheered their former heroes after the team gave White Hart Lane the ideal send-off with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.

Spurs got goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane, and held on late after Wayne Rooney halved their lead for the win.

Cape Town - Harry Kane expects the current Tottenham side to stick together in a bid to go one better than this season and claim Premier League honours.

"What a way to finish". It was another great performance at White Hart Lane and now we have to focus on the last two games. We have to keep working harder, keep getting better and hopefully next season we'll finish first.

We had one marvellous year in my time there - 1986-87 when we reached the FA Cup final and finished third - that people still ask me about when I go back to the Lane.

For the first time ever, Tottenham will play a second consecutive season in the Champions League, providing valuable income from UEFA as it completes the building work on a new 61,000-seat stadium.

It has been a successful campaign for the North London outfit, who are leaving White Hart Lane and will leave play at the Wembley Stadium next season.

"But we fight for titles and probably other clubs finishing in the top four, probably they would like to be in our position to try and fight for the title".

"It is sad to see White Hart Lane go, it has been an fantastic stadium for us - especially this season, being unbeaten", he added.

Tottenham hope to occupy their new stadium in 2018-19 - which means home games next season will take place at Wembley. The ground opened its doors in 1899, and hosted the 2,533rd and final match against a United side that had already essentially checked out of the Premier League this season. It's emotional now, I'm sure when we all get home it will start to sink in a little. But the final match at the Lane, with all the energy, enthusiasm, and emotions, were more than enough to motivate Spurs to close their stadium on the highest of notes. "After that we controlled the game and took our chances", Klopp said.
