Intel's new i9 CPUs

Apple Qualcomm spat intensifies manufacturers drawn Intel's new i9 CPUs
Troy Mann | 17 May, 2017, 14:39

Later this month, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) is expected to launch a new family of processors that leaked materials referred to as its Core X lineup.

The Core i9-7800X is the most affordable Skylake X option of the four. It's the reason my primary desktop is still rocking an Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon processor released several years ago. The chip carries 11 MB of L3 cache and will feature 28 PCI-e Gen 3.0 lanes as the processor is going to feature a TDP of 140W.

AMD's recent move to launch the Ryzen 7, 5, and 3 chips is what acted as the trigger point. It will clock at 4.0 GHz normally and 4.2 GHz when boosted. The Core i9-7800X will clock speeds at 3.5 GHz base and 4.0 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0.

The Intel Core i9-7900X is the 10 Core, 20 thread replacement to the Core i7-6950X.

Here is what Intel's leaked internal document revealed of the forthcoming high-end chips.

AnandTech reported that Intel's plans on the new lineup of desktop CPUs were leaked by an employee or partner who apparently took a photo of a PowerPoint presentation with the complete upcoming lineup. Joining the range would be the Kaby Lake X chip at a later date. On the other hand, the Kaby Lake-X family will have two processors - Core i7-7740K and Core i7-7640K. While we've talked before about how Intel might respond to AMD's Ryzen, there's no way Intel could have possibly made this change in response. Built on the Skylake-X architecture it will have 12 cores and supports 24 threads.

Next up there is the i9-7820X, an octa-core processor with threads that double its core count, 11 MB of cache, the same PCIe lanes as the 7800-X, and the same RAM configuration as the rest of the lineup. The six-to-12-core variants will all be rated at a 140-watt thermal design power, while the quad-core chips will be rated at 112 watts. Releasing an entry-level HEDT "Core i7" that would assuredly be outperformed by the Core i7-4790K, 6700K, or 7700K isn't the best way to encourage enthusiast adoption and I'm taking these rumors with a fair bit of salt. Intel's Broadwell-E based 10-core chip offered a maximum turbo boost 2.0 speed of only 3.5GHZ, which meant the user had to push the chip to higher-than-rated speeds just to match Intel's $350 chips in tasks that couldn't use more than four cores. It would not be a surprise if Intel tags with a list price of more than $1,000.
