Donald Trump praises Australia's single-payer health care system

Ellis Copeland | 17 May, 2017, 13:15

Trump's praise for the Australian system came as he met Thursday in NY with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hours after the U.S. House narrowly passed a bill to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act, the health care law enacted by former President Barack Obama.

"We will take this pathetic healthcare bill, throw it in the garbage can and do something that will work for ordinary Americans instead", Mr Sanders said in a secondary tweet. Sanders says the bill does not provide protections and does not guarantee coverage for "ordinary Americans".

The pair got off to a late start Thursday afternoon after Trump delayed his departure for NY in order to hold a White House Rose Garden press conference with Congressional Republicans following the health care bill's vote.

"It's going to be fantastic health care", Trump said, referring to his new health care plan.

"I shouldn't say this to our great gentlemen and my friend from Australia ... cause you have better healthcare than we do", Trump said.

Turnbull said Trump was different to former US President Barack Obama.

Opponents took the opportunity to relish over Trump's admittance that universal healthcare system is the right system, with Senator Bernie Sanders tweeting: "Thank you Mr Trump for admitting that universal healthcare is the better way to go".

Trump spent just a few hours in his New York City hometown Thursday, but avoided his Trump Tower home, where security has been tightened and the costs for it have mounted since he became president. Trump said. "We had a great call".

CNN's panel seemed to assume Trump was just being chummy and flattering with Turnbull without concern for the substance of what he was saying.

Whether or not the president was confused about the aims of the AHCA or merely throwing Prime Minister Turnbull an insincere compliment, Sanders has remained adamant the bill will not pass the Senate.

Later Thursday, during an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea - when US and Australia fought together against Imperial Japan - Trump joked about the phone call, saying it was "a very nice call" but conceded that it "got a little bit testy". Sanders, who has previously offered to work with Trump on health care, literally burst into laughter.

On the refugee deal, he said, "We can put the refugee deal behind you and move on".

Trump later sought to clarify his comments on twitter by criticizing the Affordable Care Act.

In the USA, the new Republican bill will significantly cut the amount of government support for Medicaid, which provides health care support to some United States citizens.

Together, the United States and Australia are building a more secure and stable world.
