Koeman sets deadline for Barkley over Everton future

Frederick Owens | 12 May, 2017, 02:19

Barkley's current £65,000-a-week deal expires at the end of next season but the 23-year-old would command a fee of around £35million.

Ronald Koeman has now set a week's deadline for the Englishman to sign a new contract.

And it would appear that such high-jinks are commonplace in the Everton dressing room because we got another glimpse of what the players get up to behind closed doors courtesy of Romelu Lukaku's Instagram on Thursday.

The following two tabs change content below.

Bill Kenwright, the Everton chairman, told the club's end-of-season awards night on Tuesday that the major shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, had promised to buy any player "who wants to play for Everton" and who is also wanted by Koeman and the director of football, Steve Walsh.

"I took the decision to leave the young boys to the England Under-20s". We still have three very hard games left.

Asked about Everton's injury problems, Koeman said in his press conference: "It's a long list".

"The board has been working a long time to sign Ross for him to stay for a longer period but it is up to the player".

The Dutchman has repeatedly criticised his player in public over the way he is developing, and earlier this season he was struggling to get into the first team.

Lukaku, who is currently the top scorer in the Premier League, has turned down a new contract at the club with his future now in doubt.

"I spoke to him and we need more productivity from him".

Koeman disagrees with the Belgian striker but believes he can still improve his game.

"If you see the performances of Rom overall this season they are better than they were and that is what you like to do as a manager, to develop players and make the team stronger".
