100 days in, Donald Trump says he has brought about 'profound change'

Ellis Copeland | 01 May, 2017, 15:58

President Jimmy Carter did not attend in 1978 and in 1980. Richard Nixon was the last president to skip the dinner completely.

The choice and setting of the rally - in a state that enthusiastically embraced his election - was a deliberate snub to a traditional White House correspondents' dinner taking place late Saturday, where he had risked being roasted by comedians. Trump visited a tool manufacturing company in Harrisburg where signed two executive orders - one directing the Commerce Department and the US trade representative to conduct a review of existing USA worldwide trade and investment agreements and another creating the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing.

Tamari pointed out that Trump did draw a "big and excited" crowd to the 7,000-seat venue.

The move - to hold a rally in a battleground state and miss the annual dinner known for glitzy elbow-rubbing between Washington journalists and Hollywood celebrities - seems created to thumb the presidential nose at the Washington press corps, with whom Trump continues to have a tense relationship, while also highlighting Trump's accomplishments on his 100th day in the Oval Office.

President Trump spent 10 minutes blasting the media before finally highlighting what he described as achievements.

'But they are trapped at the dinner which will be very, very boring, ' he said.

President Donald Trump arrives to speak at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pa., Saturday, April 29, 2017, on the 100th day of his presidency.

"I could not possibly be more thrilled to be more than one hundred miles away from the Washington swamp", declared Trump. His advisors say he is still fixated on the daily news cycle and often asks how a decision will play in the media before he chooses a path forward.

That included his decision, just three days into his presidency, to withdraw the USA from the Trans-Pacific Partnership with Australia, New Zealand, Japan and eight other Pacific nations.

Australia to raise English language standard for citizenship
The majority of the visa holders under this category were from India, accounting nearly a quarter of the intake. At the end of 2016, there were 6,139 Irish people availing of this particular visa.

China 'putting pressure' on North Korea
South Korean officials said the missile disintegrated within minutes of being launched and did not leave North Korean territory. Trump also talked with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on the weekend, who he also invited to the White House.

And today he held a 100 day rally in Pennsylvania, and used it to slam the media and his critics.

Trump made clear that he was trying to draw a direct contrast with the news media, saying that they deserved "a very, very big fat failing grade" for their coverage, before shifting to a discussion of his administration's actions, reports The Washington Post.

On Sunday morning, Trump headed to Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.

Claiming that his administration is operating "on a very simple principle" of putting "the needs of American workers, American families, American companies and American citizens first", the president promised the continued eradication of "criminal gangs and cartels that have infiltrated our country".

"Promises Made. Promises Kept" read one sign prominently displayed inside the Harrisburg arena. He said that although the president has China's best interest in mind and not ours, he was still a good man and they had a common enemy in North Korea.

Trump's detractors found nothing good to say. Don't even worry about it.

"What we've accomplished on immigration and criminal enforcement is nothing short of historic", Trump wrote in the Washington Post. Trump won the state with 48 percent of the vote, and it was critical to his victory in the Electoral College. "And we will build the wall as sure as you are standing there tonight".

During his first 100 days Trump has taken a much more active role in worldwide politics than he promised during the election campaign, with the White House struggling to deliver its domestic agenda. Among other accomplishments he listed for his first 100 days, Trump boasted that the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline was a milestone.
