Food and Farm-Milk Dispute story

Ellis Copeland | 26 April, 2017, 09:38

U.S. President Donald Trump has delivered his most sweeping broadside at Canada, blasting the northern neighbour for trade practices he says must be corrected in three areas: energy, lumber, and dairy.

Dairy industry leaders in Australia and New Zealand said they would support any move by the United States to draw the World Trade Organisation into the trade dispute. "It's a disgrace", Trump said Thursday, adding that he thinks NAFTA has been "a disaster for our country".

"Time and again, Canada has demonstrated its disregard of its dairy commitments to the United States - hampering America's exports to Canada - while pursuing ways to use its government-controlled system to unfairly dump greater Canadian exports in global markets", BNN reported.

The trade dispute began previous year when Canada chose to impose import taxes on ultra-filtered milk, a liquid concentrate used to make cheese.

In 2016, Canada imported C$557 million ($413 million) in dairy products from the U.S, while C$113 crossed the border in the opposite direction, creating a deficit of about C$445 million, Canadian government data show.

Ashlee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, who hails from Janesville, said Tuesday that Ryan's office is talking with Wisconsin farmers and dairy groups about options.

He said the trade balance on dairy "massively" favours the U.S.by a five-to-one margin.

Kevin Ellis, CEO of Cayuga Milk Ingredients, said Wednesday that the company lost $30 million in sales to Canada because of the new pricing policy.

But a new American product - a type of unfiltered milk used in cheese - had not been blocked by Canada's trade barriers. And American dairy exports make up less than 1% of total USA exports to Canada, according to Freeland.

Tensions have continued to rise between farmers and politicians in the United States and Canada since Grassland in Greenwood, Wisconsin, blamed the Canadian policy change for forcing them to cut ties with dairy farmers earlier this month.

"We're going to have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very, very quickly", he added.

President Trump blasted Canada on Thursday over a trade dispute affecting dairy farmers, calling it a "disgrace" that's the result of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Canada protects its dairy sector by putting high tariffs on imported products in order to keep prices high for its farmers. He tied both to Nafta, which he's vowed to renegotiate.

"This has been an issue for a very long time, Trump or no Trump", she said.

She says dismantling the current supply management system would be a boon to all concerned - even though there might be some short-term pain for some in the sector, who she says, could be compensated for any losses deemed a direct effect the new economic reality.

"They have in the past and I see no reason for them to change their position", said Henderson.
