Turkey's prime minister yesterday called on the opposition to respect the result of a referendum that will give sweeping new powers to the office of the president.

It was to facilitate this vote-rigging that the YSK stopped giving live data to the opposition Republican Peoples' Party (CHP) during the counting of ballots and removed the representatives of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) from polling stations in southeast Turkey for "security concerns".

He also criticized the YSK, saying, "the quickly-made decision of the electoral commission to validate incorrectly stamped or entirely unstamped ballots is a violation of Turkish law".

"Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast and its three main cities, including the capital Ankara and the largest city Istanbul, looked set to vote No, after a bitter and divisive campaign, " a local newspaper reported on Sunday.

"Calling people to the street is wrong and is outside the line of legitimacy", Yildirim said, adding that "we expect the main opposition party's leader to act more responsibly".

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday congratulated Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for winning a referendum on enhancing his powers, the Kremlin and Turkish state media said.

His nephew, Can Atalay, said by telephone that the police had told Mr. Atalay that he was being charged for "inciting hatred among people by claiming the referendum result is dubious".

The leftist BirGun daily and opposition T24 website said at least five activists had been detained so far while arrest warrants had been issued for a total of 38 people.

What little remains of Turkey's once-thriving democracy has already become a sham, especially since the failed coup attempt last July.

"We look to the government of Turkey to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all its citizens - regardless of their vote on April 16 - as guaranteed by the Turkish constitution", he said.

Erdogan has dismissed the criticism from the observer mission, telling the monitors that they should "know your place".

Referring to Erdogan, Allen warned that "history tells us that when you accumulate that much authority in one single person, it often doesn't go very well".

Turkey voted on Sunday to switch to a presidential system, greatly increasing Erdogan's powers.

The two leaders will meet in May, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a press conference carried by CNN Turk on Wednesday.

The White House said they also discussed a USA missile strike in Syria and the fight against the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group, AFP reported. "It would be better to have (a) face-to face meeting and take forward our relationship", Erdogan said.
