Commenting on the Centre's decision to extend Aadhaar-like unique identification (UID) to cattle in order to check cow smuggling, the Congress on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party playing politics over religion.

The submission by the Centre to have UID for cows came in a plea by Akhil Bharatiya Krishi Goseva Sangh to check the "depletion of indigenous livestock and unabated and unbridled illegal and wrongful smuggling of cattle to Bangaldesh through borders of India".

Kumar told the court that the polyurethane tags method had been recommended by a committee headed by a Joint Secretary-rank officer of the Home Ministry. The committee further said special care should be given to cattle beyond the age of milking.

The Central government has also recommended special care for cattle beyond the age of milking, ANI tweeted.

The report proposed for all cows across India to have a Unique Identification Number for tracking. It is largely observed that soon after the milk productivity of the cattle ends, they are sold out or smuggled. "Such cattle may be in a dairy, kanji house (shelter home) or dry dairy and a registration card has to be maintained by the owner of the cattle which may be transferred to the next owner, in case legitimate sale/transfer takes place". "The UID for a cow and its progeny should be made mandatory across India", the Centre said. The existing shelter homes lack facility and human resources.

Further, reports claim that almost one lakh technicians have been armed with 50,000 tablets.

Another media report by The Times of India in 2015 stated that select cows and Maharashtra were given similar yellow tags. Their mission will focus on affixing a polyurethane tag on the ears of the cattle with a tag applicator.

These tags cost Rs 8 apiece and are light weighted.

After fixing tags, technicians will use tablets for updating number in online database.
