Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has to go for referendum because his party can not change the system through parliament because it is short of absolute majority of that needs 367 votes for constitutional amendments in parliament.

Erdogan has spent much of his recent campaign attacking the head of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), which is spear-heading the "no" camp.

Voters in Turkey will go to the polls on 16 April to decide on the referendum that would give Erdoğan sweeping new powers.

He said leading political figures of the country, including the late Presidents, Turgut Ozal and Suleyman Demirel, and the late Prime Minister, Necmeddin Erbakan, and the founders of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Grand Unity Party (BBP), Alparslan Turkes and Muhsin Yazicioglu, support the proposed presidential system.

"Will you say yes on April 16 for a great, strong, prosperous, and stabilized Turkey?"

A huge poster of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is draped over part of a building in Istanbul on April 9, 2017. Erdogan has described the banning on security grounds of some rallies by Turkish ministers in the Netherlands and Germany as "Nazi-like" tactics.

Turkey's seven-month operation in northern Syria left 67 service personnel martyred, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday.

Many Turks took to social media to express their disbelief that Mr Erdogan was allegedly using the country's state of emergency to canvass votes. Most recently, the general elections in 2015 were observed by the OSCE and Council of Europe (CoE), with the organization saying, "Turkey's well-managed, democratic elections demonstrated pluralism".

Accusing the AKP of creating a "climate of fear", Demirtas said in a message from prison: "I invite everyone to defeat this fear, go to the ballots and say "No" to fear".

The president has also repeatedly vowed to "without hesitation" sign any bill passed by parliament to bring back capital punishment, a move that would drive the final nail into its membership aspirations.

But the push by Ankara to hold political rallies by the Turkish politicians in the European Union have been met by strong opposition, most notably by Berlin and Amsterdam after these countries have barred several political rallies.
