A 12-year-old boy trying to drive from coast-to-coast through the vast Australian outback was stopped by traffic police more than a thousand kilometres into the epic road trip, authorities said today.

He'd driven across nearly the entire state of New South Wales and was en route to Perth, according to a NSW Police spokesperson.

The boy apparently wanted to drive across Australia solo, a journey of nearly 4000km.

Officers said the the boy's destination was the west coast city of Perth - more than 2,500 miles from Kendall.

In a statement on Sunday, a NSW Police spokesperson said the boy was on his way to Perth.

Highway patrol officers stopped the boy in Broken Hill when they noticed the car's bumper was dragging on the ground.

The boy drove from Kendall to Broken Hill before being stopped.

The journey between Kendall and Broken Hill takes about 14 hours, but it's just a fraction of distance to Perth, which takes 43 hours of driving.

Further inquiries into how the boy came to be driving the vehicle and managed to get across the entire state are continuing, police added. The highway is "famous for its unbending trajectory through the barren scrubland", according to 9 News. It recommends drivers to "carry extra petrol and plenty of water and food".
