This year's celebrations will notably be low key compared to last year when the Queen hit 90, where there were street parties and lighting of a thousand beacons all over the country.

While her 91st was a more private affair, there was a 41-gun salute in Hyde Park and 21-gun salute in Windsor Great Park at midday, ahead of a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London at 13:00 BST. This was one of the several engagements filling her royal calendar.

But the ever-popular monarch has begun handing over duties to other royals, standing down as patron of 25 bodies at the end of past year, including the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Prince Harry received high praise this week after he spoke out about seeking counselling years after his mother's death when he was a child, which earned him admiration.

The birthday girl - with four children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren - is Britain's oldest and longest-reigning monarch in history.

The Queen earned the nation's love and admiration by refusing to be political as well as making her family's image become more modern.

As one of the most recognisable people in the world, it's no surprise the Queen doesn't need a license, as we can't imagine anyone pulling her over for an RBT. She is slated to meet President Donald Trump later this year, though almost 1.3 million people have signed a petition to cancel his state visit "to avoid embarrassing Queen Elizabeth".

Despite being followed closely in her public appearances - feeding an elephant at a British zoo this month, for example - she has succeeded in keeping life behind palace doors relatively secret. Kensington Palace also paid tribute to the Queen's birthday on Twitter, writing, "Wishing Her Majesty The Queen".
