Facebook has cracked down on 30,000 accounts found to be spreading fake news stories or spam in France ahead of the country's pivotal presidential election.

Facebook ramped up its efforts against the spread of false news and misinformation on its service in December, a month after the US presidential election.

The new changes will help the social media titan detect fake accounts more efficiently.

According to Facebook, the fake Likes are the result of a campaign to create fraudulent accounts that would Like popular pages, through which the fake accounts could then attempt to make friends to spam.

The move, which comes 10 days before the first round of a hotly contested French presidential election, is among the most aggressive yet by Facebook to move against accounts that violate its terms of service, rather than simply respond to complaints.

"By constantly improving our techniques, we also aim to reduce the financial incentives for spammers who rely on distribution to make their efforts worthwhile", Shabnam Shaik, a technical program manager at Facebook, wrote in a Facebook post.

The Menlo Park, Calif. -based Facebook will incorporate patterns of activity including posting the same content or a higher volume of messages than normal in an effort to stop fake accounts from being accounted.

In France, Facebook has already come up with a programme to use outside fast-checkers in order to combat fake news in the users' news feeds. "We fight their spread and are giving you some tips how you can recognise whether a news item is true or not".

In addition to its ongoing attack against fake or misleading news stories, Facebook is now also cracking down on fake user accounts as well. It turns out that all the haranguing about fake news among media observers has spread to the general population: 42 percent of people said that they don't trust news on the platform because Facebook hasn't done a good job of curbing fake news on its platform. With a major election upcoming, Facebook-which saw mounting criticism following the U.S. election in November-is eager to let the world know it's on watch against false information. Many false news sites mimic authentic news sources by making small changes to the URL.

It's all in support of a new Facebook feature that empowers Facebook to report propaganda websites that look like legit news.
