North Korea has nuclear test sites and missile bases around the country, as well as the world's third-largest stockpile of chemical weapons, behind the US and Russian Federation.

South Korea's flag will fly in Pyongyang on Friday as its women's football team takes on their neighbours in the first ever competitive soccer match between the two countries hosted by the North. North Korea is "also pursuing development of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles capabilities, and an improved Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile", Hyten told senators.

Heading into the first talks between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, North Korea was the front-and-center security issue on the table.

Nevertheless, the strikes against Assad's government in Syria - which Pyongyang considers an ally - are likely to have added weight in the North's eyes to Trump's recent threat to act unilaterally against North Korea's weapons program.

Working-level defense officials of the three countries held a video conference earlier in the day to discuss the North's missile launch Wednesday.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula "is no longer in control due to extreme, provocative and aggressive war moves conducted by the US", and requires the North to take action, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pyongyang wrote in a Thursday memo carried by the state-run Korea Central News Agency.

But Syria is not North Korea.

The US strike in Syria could have repercussions far beyond the Middle East.

It was the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK), as the North is officially known, reluctance to see the South Korea flag flying on its territory that was the reason behind the extended break between matches.

'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade
Tillerson said Xi agreed with Trump that North Korea's nuclear advances had reached a "very serious stage". Tremendous goodwill and friendship was formed, but only time will tell on trade, ' he tweeted.

The Japanese government has made a decision to extend unilateral sanctions against North Korea by two years, Trade Minister Hiroshige Seko said on Friday.

Analysts had earlier said the strikes contained a clear message for Pyongyang that the U.S. was not afraid to exercise the military option, and there had been speculation as to how the North would respond.

While China has clearly lost patience with Pyongyang's nuclear provocations, it is extremely wary of any response that might bring about North Korea's collapse and chaos on its doorstep.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that "tremendous progress" was made in US relations with China.

The Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch and demanded a halt to all missile tests, stressing again that they violate United Nations sanctions and "are significantly increasing tension in the region and beyond".

The US on Friday fired missiles at a military base in Syria, and Trump has suggested such military action could be a signal to North Korea as well.

"China has great influence over North Korea".

"I think Xi would be happy to see that Trump toned down his rhetoric ahead of the summit and realised that it is essential to work together with China to remove nuclear threats from North Korea".
