Gender pay gap reporting comes into effect

The Gender Wage Gap and What it Might Mean for You Let’s Fix the Wage Gap Shall We? D'Ariel Myrick University of Georgia

At the current rate of progress, it could take almost a century before the gender pay gap is closed in Britain. "If they have a pay gap of 18 per cent, they will get a lot of negative press". It does not go as far as Iceland, which plans to make employers prove they offer equal pay regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality. It might effectively embarrass some businesses into giving gender pay disparity the attention it deserves.

At the moment small business will remain unaffected, however other countries in Europe are now asking companies with as few as 25 employees to report these figures in an attempt to try and address the gender pay gap so it could well become common practice for all businesses in the not to distant future. Women in Iceland held a massive protest against this gender-based pay gap by walking out of the workplaces to march on the streets.

According to the equal pay bill, companies will be questioned on the reason behind the payback in their organisation and failure provide convincing reasons will result in charging of huge fines.

Thorsteinn Viglundsson, social affairs and equality minister, accepted the law could be "burdensome" for the country's businesses, but said the benefits would outweigh the costs.

According to Sam Smethers, chief executive of the Fawcett Society, which campaigns for equal pay, similar measures must be considered in the UK. They will be required to publish an annual report detailing the difference in the average total earnings of men and women, the difference in the average bonuses paid to men and women and the gender demographic of every wage band. However, improvements have been seen towards equal pay in all of these areas.

"It puts such a spotlight on the issue", said Mr Terry.

The government said the United Kingdom was one of the first countries in the world to report on the gender pay gap, which now sees British men being paid over 18% more than women in the same roles. "The gender pay reporting really smacks them in the face", he said.

The WEF has previously said that with current trends it will take 70 more years to close the gendered wage gap, and 170 years to achieve economic equality between men and women. "While many factors contribute to the UK's gender pay gap, unequal pay is already illegal and is only a part of the gap".
