EU's Tusk, Britain's May meeting for Brexit talks in London

Ellis Copeland | 09 April, 2017, 04:31

Both leaders agreed that the tone of discussions had been positive on both sides, and agreed that they would seek to remain in close touch as the negotiations progressed.

Mrs May and Mr Tusk agreed to try to "lower tensions" on the issue. The European Parliament on Wednesday backed the bloc's chief negotiator in demanding Britain pay as much as 60 billion euros ($64 billion) for outstanding commitments.

An EU official said Tusk and May had a "good and friendly" meeting lasting almost two hours at the British leader's Downing Street official residence.

This follows Mr Tusk's letter to the Prime Minister setting out the EU's draft negotiating guidelines, clause 22 of which stated that no deal between the European Union and the United Kingdom after the Brexit negotiations will apply to Gibraltar without the bilateral agreement of the United Kingdom and Spain.

In a statement, a No 10 spokesman said the Prime Minister was determined to achieve the "best possible deal" for Gibraltar as well as the UK. That raised hackles in Britain, where some saw it as a bid by Madrid to assert control over the future of an enclave that has been British since 1713.

Dudley that a move to unwind the Fed's balance sheet would probably be accompanied by a "little" pause in raising interest rates. He added: "We'll get to a much smaller balance sheet, but not as small as prior to the crisis", or around $900 billion.

Following a meeting with Mr Tusk in Downing Street, the Prime Minister has insisted there could be no change to the status of the Rock without the consent of its people.

We both hope to find a good solution with the UK.

The summit is billed as "discussing the way ahead on Brexit" after the PM formally triggered two years of withdrawal talks when she invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty last week.

"If you think about it, once we've got the deal, once we've agreed what the new relationship will be for the future, it will be necessary for there to be a period of time when businesses and government are adjusting systems and so forth, depending on the nature of the deal, a period of time during which that deal will be implemented", she said.

The foreign ministers of Portugal and Denmark said they want a negotiated settlement that serves the interests of both Britain and the rest of the EU.
